SCOPE AND SIZE:
BOWA Construction provided CMAR services for the Illinois Capital Development Board’s new Joliet Inpatient Treatment Center. The 180,000 SF new mental health correctional facility is located on the same grounds as Joliet’s current treatment center and includes more than 200 beds in order to offer rehabilitation options to inmates that struggle with mental health. Due to COVID-19 shutdowns, the original schedule was extended one month; however, was substantially complete a full month early.
CHALLENGES/SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES:
The coordination of MEP systems above the ceiling proved to be a complex task due to the high number of systems that needed to be integrated in a limited space. The challenge was further complicated by the strict ceiling height requirements, which left little room for these systems to be installed without interference. To address these challenges, the team used Building Information Modeling (BIM) to improve coordination among all trades. BIM’s 3D visualization helped identify potential clashes early on, while RFIs allowed for quick problem-solving. Some design changes were also recommended to optimize the layout and ensure proper system integration. These proactive steps helped resolve conflicts, ensuring the systems were installed efficiently within the tight ceiling space.
